For twenty years, my husband forced me to cut my Hair short against my will. I Thought It was his…
He didn’t answer. I should have stood up and walked out. But I was only twenty-six, newly married, and still believed that
sometimes you had to compromise to keep peace in a marriage.
That day, my hair fell onto the white tiled floor while I cried in front of the mirror. Daniel stood behind me. He didn’t smile. He
didn’t try to comfort me. He only watched carefully as Martha gathered my cut hair.
When we returned home, Daniel hugged me and whispered:
“One day, you’ll understand.”
I pushed him away.
“I don’t want to understand anything.”
I thought it would happen only once. I was wrong. Every time my hair grew past my shoulders, Daniel made another
appointment with Martha.
At first, I argued. Then I begged. Once, I secretly avoided the salon for three months. When Daniel noticed that my hair had
grown longer, his expression changed.
“Tomorrow at eleven, we’re going to Martha.”
“I’m not going.”
“Laura, please don’t make this difficult.”
“You’re the one making it difficult. This is my body and my hair.”
He stared at me silently for several seconds. There was no anger in his eyes. There was something stranger—fear. But the
next moment, he became cold and unyielding again.
“We’re going tomorrow.”
One of our neighbors once saw me getting into the car in tears. Later, she pulled me aside and asked:
“Does Daniel control you? Does he force you to do other things too?”
I defended him. I said that he had never hit me, never raised his voice, and always considered my opinion about everything
else in our lives. But even I didn’t understand why I was defending a man who had ignored one of my simplest wishes for
years. Over time, our children began to notice it too.
